DKA at Diagnosis of Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus and Risk Factors in Children Aged 6 Months to 19 Years at David Bernardino National Pediatric Hospital-Angola
Diabetes mellitus is a disorder of metabolic homeostasis controlled by the beta cell hormone; insulin, leading to abnormal metabolism of carbohydrates, proteins and fats. Type 1 is caused by an absolute deficiency of insulin due to the progressive destruction of the beta cells of the pancreas. While the prevalence is between 15-30 million patients worldwide, the incidence of T1DM varies sharply across countries and age groups; with the highest incidence observed in children between 10 and 14-years-old.
