Comparing the intensity of variability changes in software product line evolution

Software Product Line (SPL) evolution impacts multiple kinds of artifacts simultaneously. In previous work we analyzed the frequency and amount in which developers change variability information on a fine-grained level in the Linux kernel [2]. This revealed that changes to variability information in code, build, and variability model artifacts occur surprisingly infrequently and only affect small parts of the analyzed artifacts.

Abstract

Software Product Line (SPL) evolution impacts multiple kinds of artifacts simultaneously. In previous work we analyzed the frequency and amount in which developers change variability information on a fine-grained level in the Linux kernel [2]. This revealed that changes to variability information in code, build, and variability model artifacts occur surprisingly infrequently and only affect small parts of the analyzed artifacts.
