Physicochemical characterization of wastewater from the Amirou Boubacar Diallo National Hospital in Niamey (Niger) (ABDNH/Niger) and its impact on the environment
The AMIROU BOUBACAR Diallo National Hospital (ABDNH) is among the reference hospitals in the Niamey region by to the quality of care it offers to the population. To better manage its wastewater, an activated sludge treatment plant was built for this hospital. This study aims to determine the physicochemical quality of wastewater from the ABDNH activated sludge treatment plant and its impact on the environment. To carry out this study, twenty (20) wastewater samples were taken at the entrance and exit of the ABDNH treatment plant. The samples lasted five (5) weeks to take into account fluctuations. The results obtained indicate that the physicochemical parameters such as: pH (7.025), temperature (32.12 °C), conductivity (333 μS/cm) and certain heavy metals of this hospital comply with national standards and international standards for wastewater discharge. However, it was found that the average values obtained for DCO (368 mgO2/L) and DBO5 (298 mgO2/L) obtained at ABDNH are higher than national and international standards. These high DCO and DBO5 values indicate that wastewater discharged into the river can have harmful consequences on the health of local residents and disrupt the conditions of aquatic flora and fauna.
