Advancing Multifunctional Semitransparent Organic Solar Cells through Strategic Optical Layer Integration

Semitransparent organic solar cells (ST-OSCs) hold immense promise across diverse applications such as seamlessly integrated building photovoltaics, floating solar arrays, innovative agrivoltaic systems, and stylish wearable electronics. These cells offer multifunctionality with their unique blend of power generation, light permeability, and customizable hues. Particularly, bifacial ST-OSCs emerge as a pivotal solution capable of harnessing light from both front and rear surfaces. Their ability to absorb light from both sides enhances the energy efficiency, especially in environments with high reflective surfaces. Moreover, these lightweight and flexible cells can be integrated into unconventional locations, supporting innovative architectural designs and portable energy solutions. In this article, an optically optimized Sb2O3 layer featuring a high refractive index and minimal optical loss in the visible to near-infrared region is paired with the Ag film. This research delves into enhancing the performance of bifacial ST-OSCs through the strategic incorporation of an optical coupling layer on top of the Ag electrode. This ingenious addition not only mitigates reflectance from the top electrode but also enhances parameters such as average visible transmittance, color-rendering index, and color correlated temperature and the overall bifaciality of the device. These findings suggest that interfacial engineering and optical coupling are effective strategies for developing high-performance ST-OSCs that exhibit vibrant colors, excellent transparency, and high efficiency.
