Automatic Detection of Forest Fires Using Satellite Images

As part of the Finnish IDNDR contribution, a prototype workstation for forest fire fighting was developed. The workstation consists of two parts: a monitoring/detection system and a support system for planning of fire-suppression measures. The monitoring/detection system is almost completely automatic while the support system is highly interactive. Real-time NOAA images are used in the forest fire monitoring/detection system. The meteorological NOAA satellites provide image data of an area 4–6 times a day. The spatial resolution of the AVHRR -(Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer) sensor is 1.1 km.

Abstract

As part of the Finnish IDNDR contribution, a prototype workstation for forest fire fighting was developed. The workstation consists of two parts: a monitoring/detection system and a support system for planning of fire-suppression measures. The monitoring/detection system is almost completely automatic while the support system is highly interactive. Real-time NOAA images are used in the forest fire monitoring/detection system. The meteorological NOAA satellites provide image data of an area 4–6 times a day. The spatial resolution of the AVHRR -(Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer) sensor is 1.1 km.
