Dynamic analysis of structures using transfer matrices - An assessment of the numerical accuracy

Transfer matrix formulation is a convenient method for dynamic analysis of lumped mass systems. This method involves matrix multiplication operation whose order depends on the number of lumped masses. For super tall buildings multiple matrix multiplications could lead to computational errors stemming largely from round-off errors. The accuracy of such numerical computations are assessed by evaluating the results analytically and comparing them with the results obtained from direct multiplication. Typical results indicate that both methods yield similar results, confirming that the accuracy of computer results using direct multiplication is guaranteed. However, the required computer time is greater when direct multiplication method is used.
