Seismic effects on band beam construction in Australia: A preliminary analysis

This paper covers the preliminary analytical work for which the aim is to predict the probable failure mode in the joint region between reinforced concrete band beams and columns, and for the structure as a whole. Analytical results including linear static and nonlinear dynamic frame analyses are presented. The energy dissipation mechanism of a structure is investigated for a range of effective beam widths at the joint, with the implications for detailing requirements discussed briefly.

Abstract

This paper covers the preliminary analytical work for which the aim is to predict the probable failure mode in the joint region between reinforced concrete band beams and columns, and for the structure as a whole. Analytical results including linear static and nonlinear dynamic frame analyses are presented. The energy dissipation mechanism of a structure is investigated for a range of effective beam widths at the joint, with the implications for detailing requirements discussed briefly.
