Density effects in cellular automata models of granular materials

Density waves are studied in a two dimensional cellular automata model of the gravity-driven flow of ellipsoidal particles through a wedge-shaped hopper. The density variations form above the apex of the hopper and move upward, opposite the grain motion, with a well defined velocity. Nearest-neighbor interactions which lead to alignment of neighboring grains can destroy the density waves.

Abstract

Density waves are studied in a two dimensional cellular automata model of the gravity-driven flow of ellipsoidal particles through a wedge-shaped hopper. The density variations form above the apex of the hopper and move upward, opposite the grain motion, with a well defined velocity. Nearest-neighbor interactions which lead to alignment of neighboring grains can destroy the density waves.
