A Health Sciences Library Collaboration: Using Digital Media for Creation, Outreach, and Communication

This presentation describes a collaborative model in which a digital media designer/consultant and a library liaison work with faculty, researchers, clinicians, and other users to support outreach and engagement through a variety of media, including print and still images, audio, video, and emerging Web 2.0 technologies. The presenters argue that as digital communication tools rapidly evolve, library services and professional roles must likewise adapt to meet changing user needs. Because scholars and clinicians often have highly specialized expertise but limited time to develop communication strategies or master new technologies, they benefit from assistance in translating complex information for broader audiences. The presentation highlights the library's unique position as a provider of collaborative spaces, technology expertise, information literacy support, and community connections that facilitate engagement within and across departments, professions, and public communities. Benefits to the library include expanded services, stronger relationships with faculty and other partners, increased understanding of research activities, and opportunities for community engagement. Drawing on two project examples, the presentation also explores challenges encountered by both collaborators and librarians, including communicating with mixed audiences, envisioning effective outreach approaches, managing projects, addressing hesitancy toward multimedia and Web 2.0 tools, and sustaining collaborative relationships over time.
