Use of high-pressure hydraulic testing for the investigation of the mechanical behaviour of rock in vertical gravity wells

Summary: In the context of investigations undertaken for the design of an energy transfer pumping station, a high-pressure hydraulic test was used on a shaft with a depth of 300 m which was made in the gravity-well zone. This test was intended to confirm that the geomechanical characteristics of the bedrock foundation would permit the construction of hydraulic connective structures without the use of steel linings. The test first of all included the identification (by means of a conventional Lugeon-type test) of very permeable zones and their treatment with cement-slurry injections. The application of pressures up to approximately 50 bars in the last 150 m of the shaft showed the following : the efficiency of the cement injections, slight elastic opening of fissuration, retention of the overall tightness of the bedrock under high pressure. This type of test therefore makes it possible to avoid encasing the structures under pressure. A concrete lining complemented by injection should suffice to insure the tightness of the structure.
