A reliability approach to wedge stability analysis

A reliability approach called advanced first-order second-moment (FOSM) method proposed by Hasofer and Lind (1974) is used to analyse wedge stability of rock slopes, since this method is free from the limitations of already used Monte Carlo simulation technique, Rosenblueth’s point estimate and first-order second-moment methods. In this reliability approach, friction angle, cohesion and joint orientation parameters are modelled as random variables. The sensitivity of both reliability index and probability of slope failure to the variations in basic variables are investigated. The effects of joint orientation, friction angle and cohesion on probability of slope failure and reliability index are studied.
