A new method of modelling subsidence above an underground mining excavation
The paper presents an integral methodology of modelling the process of “inducing mass deficit” and corresponding stress-strain changes in the rock mass due to underground mining works. The modelling has been based on a detailed analysis of actual engineering geological conditions of the deposit and the application of the results of geotechnical investigations for the purpose of defining characteristic rock mass parameters. Finite element method has been applied using a visco-elastoplastic model of the material. The presented procedure has numerous advantages over ordinary methods of subsidence analysis, essentially based on experience or specific methods related to a given mining area, particularly emphasizing the relationship between numerical procedure and investigation, and the simulation of the process development in time. The method has been successfully utilized in solving complex problems of a brown coal mine in Serbia, Yugoslavia.
