A deep basement excavation — Comparison of field measurements and numerical predictions
Comparisons between field measurements and numerical predictions are presented for the problem of a deep basement excavated in rock in the central business district of Sydney, Australia. The rock mass is a massive sandstone formation containing horizontal bedding planes and separation features, and jointing which is approximately vertical. The field measurements include displacements from inclinometer tubing. The predictions of these displacements involved the use of a coupled finite element and boundary element procedure in which the rock mass was represented as an equivalent, anisotropic, elastoplastic continuum. It was found that the equivalent continuum approach is capable of reproducing both the magnitude and essential character of the deformation pattern and the predictions compare favourably with the results of an independent analysis made using the distinct element technique.
