Monitoring and control of slope stability during construction of a shallow tunnel in a complex formation
The problem discussed involves the stability of the slope on one side of the Riola Tunnel in a weak and complex formation. Immediately following the excavation of the heading, the potential for slope failure was indicated by the increased aperture of the cracks in the houses abutting the slope. The stability analyses were made and a two-stage stabilization scheme for the slope was proposed; the first stage was carried out. The effectiveness of the support scheme was verified by continuous monitoring during and after subsequent bench excavation.
