Application of Time Domain EM survey in civil engineering

The authors applied the Time Domain Electro-Magnetic method ( TDEM ) in site assessment studies for civil engineering projects, especially tunnel construction. While TDEM method had been used for natural resource exploration thousands of meters below the ground, we applied this method to estimate accurate subsurface from near surface to the depth of 200 meters to detect geological structures forward of the tunnel face. Rock resistivity is related to lithology and hydrogeology, and TDEM resistivity sounding is a valuable geological mapping tool. We will describe the method’s technical background and some case studies in this technical report.

Abstract

The authors applied the Time Domain Electro-Magnetic method ( TDEM ) in site assessment studies for civil engineering projects, especially tunnel construction. While TDEM method had been used for natural resource exploration thousands of meters below the ground, we applied this method to estimate accurate subsurface from near surface to the depth of 200 meters to detect geological structures forward of the tunnel face. Rock resistivity is related to lithology and hydrogeology, and TDEM resistivity sounding is a valuable geological mapping tool. We will describe the method’s technical background and some case studies in this technical report.
