Human-computer interaction: a cognitive intervention approach

The general aim of this study was to explore the human component of human-computer interaction generally and in particular at implementation of an end-user information technology application within the construction maintenance management environment and possible effects on productivity. The study follows on from previous work on staff perceptions. Observations indicated that the computerized management maintenance system was perceived to reduce the computer operators control over the work environment, producing a more depersonalised work environment possibly leading to deindividuation and then to a lowering of motivation and learned helplessness in the work environment with a consequential lessening of productivity. Cognitive intervention could be used in an attempt to integrate IT application implementation with perceived ownership and control over the work environment. Further research is recommended in the area of cognitive intervention, within the construction industry generally.
