Interview with William Cottle, Nelson Dean, Jock Gilmour and Jack Atkinson
Audio recording and transcript of William Cottle, Nelson Dean, Jock Gilmour, and Jack Atkinson's 1984 interview with Lynne Bowen for the Coal Tyee History Project. The transcript (but not the recording) also includes excerpts from a 1985 discussion with Nelson Dean, William Cottle, and Tom Bentley. In the first discussion, Cottle, Dean, Gilmour, and Atkinson discuss the 1887 explosion at the Number 1 Esplanade Mine with Bowen. They also answer her questions about mining terminology and share information about equipment, operations, and other people in the coal mining industry. The group discusses South Wellington and the various mines located in the area. In the second discussion, Dean, Cottle, and Bentley give their interpretations of mining terms and Bill Cottle shares stories about his father's experience during the Vancouver Island Coal Miners' Strike. The group also talks about their own coal mining days and they reflect on Robert Dunsmuir's political career.
