A second interview with Harry Dawes
Audio recording and transcript of Harry Dawes's 1979 interview with Bernard McNicholl for the Coal Tyee History Project. Dawes shares information from his career as a coal miner on Vancouver Island, where he worked in mines in both the Nanaimo area and in Cumberland. He describes his different jobs, and mining equipment and methods. He explains how he worked seasonally in Drumheller and on Vancouver Island, travelling back and forth every six months from 1929 to 1936. He talks about safety conditions in mines and how he had two miner's tickets, which opened up job opportunities for him. Dawes is asked about Vancouver Island's ethnic communities and about Nanaimo's red-light district.
