Validation of a distinct element model for toppling rock slopes

Physical modelling of toppling phenomena in rock slopes is carried out in the laboratory by paying attention to the mechanical characterisation of both the material and the discontinuities. The complete displacement field is measured as toppling takes place, and the recorded data are used to validate the numerical simulation of the tests. In particular, a distinct element analysis of the toppling tests is performed, but even if the geometry and the mechanical parameters are known, the numerical results and the real measurements do not compare satisfactorily. A cause of the difference is to be found in the changing geometry of the real blocks as fractures develop at some significant points.

Abstract

Physical modelling of toppling phenomena in rock slopes is carried out in the laboratory by paying attention to the mechanical characterisation of both the material and the discontinuities. The complete displacement field is measured as toppling takes place, and the recorded data are used to validate the numerical simulation of the tests. In particular, a distinct element analysis of the toppling tests is performed, but even if the geometry and the mechanical parameters are known, the numerical results and the real measurements do not compare satisfactorily. A cause of the difference is to be found in the changing geometry of the real blocks as fractures develop at some significant points.
