Examination of Mechanical Behavior in Nanocrystalline Materials

It is well known that a decrease in grain size generally leads to an increase in yield and flow stress in metals and alloys. Processing methods now permit the preparation of samples with grain sizes in the nanometer range. In this paper we consider mechanisms which may control the mechanical behavior of nanocrystalline metals and compare predicted behavior with the limited experimental results available at present.

Abstract

It is well known that a decrease in grain size generally leads to an increase in yield and flow stress in metals and alloys. Processing methods now permit the preparation of samples with grain sizes in the nanometer range. In this paper we consider mechanisms which may control the mechanical behavior of nanocrystalline metals and compare predicted behavior with the limited experimental results available at present.
